How to Post a Video to LinkedIn

Uploading an optimised social video to LinkedIn is a straightforward process that can massively enhance your online presence and engagement.

Here’s my simple step-by-step guide that will walk you through how to do it quickly and effectively, ensuring your content stands out and reaches your target audience.

Step 1 – Start Your Post

First, navigate to LinkedIn.com using your desktop or laptop.

Once there, locate and click ‘Media’ at the top of your screen to begin a new post. This is where you can select the video you’d like to share with your professional network.

Step 2 – Captions

If your video includes open captions, an additional step is needed to ensure the best viewing experience.

After selecting your video, click on the ‘Captions’ button. Here, you’ll see an option titled ‘Add auto captions’. It’s crucial to deselect this option to prevent LinkedIn from generating and overlaying new captions on top of your existing open captions, which could lead to a cluttered and confusing viewing experience.

For those whose videos do not feature open captions, you have two choices.

You can either leave the ‘Add auto captions’ option selected, allowing LinkedIn to automatically generate captions for your video, or you can take control by uploading your own captions in an SRT file format.

This latter option gives you the ability to ensure accuracy and maintain the professional quality of your content.

Step 3 – Video Thumbnail

Next, it’s time to select your video’s thumbnail by clicking the ‘Video thumbnail’ icon.

This is an often-overlooked but crucial step in the process. Uploading your own video thumbnail gives you the power to choose the first image viewers will see on their timeline before they click to play your video.

Without a custom thumbnail, LinkedIn defaults to using the first frame of your video, which might not always represent your content effectively.

Once you’ve added your chosen thumbnail, click ‘Add’, then ‘Next’ to proceed to the final step: adding a description to your post. This is your opportunity to engage your audience with a brief insight into what your video is about and why they should watch it.

Finally, you have the option to post your video immediately or schedule it for a later time. This flexibility allo

Step 4 – Post or Schedule

ws you to plan your content strategy and ensure your video reaches your audience at the optimal time.

By following these steps, you can maximise the impact of your video content on LinkedIn, ensuring it not only looks professional but also engages and resonates with your target audience. Whether it’s sharing insights, showcasing your expertise, or promoting your business, optimised video content on LinkedIn is a powerful tool in your digital marketing arsenal.
