Do You Need a Videographer or a Full Video Production Team?

Not sure if you need a videographer or a full production team? Here’s how to choose the right option for your next business video.

If you’re thinking about making a video for your business, you might be wondering – do I really need a full production team, or can I just hire a videographer for a day?

It’s a common question. Maybe you’ve got some in-house experience. Maybe you’ve even edited a few videos before. Or perhaps it’s a cost thing – you’re trying to be smart with your budget and just need someone to operate the camera.

We get it. There are plenty of reasons you might be leaning towards hiring just a camera operator. But before you go ahead, it’s worth understanding the difference between the two options – and what each one can (and can’t) do for you.

What’s the difference, anyway?

A videographer is usually a solo operator. They’ll turn up with a camera (or two), lights, microphones – whatever kit’s needed – and capture what’s happening in front of the lens. Some are very experienced and come with impressive gear.

But most videographers focus on filming only. They’re not always directors. They might not be used to managing interviewees, coaxing performances from non-actors, or shaping a story on the fly. They can absolutely shoot beautiful footage – but that’s just one piece of the puzzle.

A production company, on the other hand, includes a videographer as part of a wider team. We handle everything from pre-production (like scripts, schedules, and shot lists), to directing, sound recording, multi-camera setups, and of course, editing.

We know how to prepare properly. We have dedicated people for planning, managing risks, working with talent, and crafting a strong visual story. That means we’re not just turning up with a camera – we’re turning up with a plan.

When a videographer might be enough

Sometimes, a solo videographer is all you need.

  • You’ve got solid video experience in-house and just need someone to capture footage
  • It’s a one-off event and you’re not quite sure how you’ll use the content yet
  • You already know exactly what you want and how to brief them
  • You’re keeping costs low and don’t need anything edited

In these cases, a good videographer can absolutely plug a gap – a bit like calling in a sparkie to wire a socket, rather than bringing in a full building crew.

When a production team makes a big difference

If your video is tied to a business outcome – like sales, recruitment, training or reputation – then a production company is your best bet.

We start with the end in mind: what do you need this video to do? Then we reverse-engineer it with the right script, shots, and message to get you there.

Other times, projects can quietly grow arms and legs:

  • You need a second edit for social media
  • You want a faster turnaround
  • You realise you need drone footage, or voiceover, or subtitles…

That’s where having a full team becomes invaluable. You’re not relying on one person to juggle everything – and you won’t be left scrambling when things get complicated.

The hidden risks of “just filming”

Going barebones might seem fine at first – until things go sideways.

Common issues include:

  • Scheduling problems – no one keeping track, so you run late or miss shots
  • Interview fails – no director or producer to guide people on camera
  • Content gaps – you get to the edit and realise you’re missing key footage
  • Format issues – you forgot to shoot in portrait for social media
  • Reputation risks – if stakeholders are involved, poor planning can reflect badly on your brand
A good production company thinks through these things before you’ve even thought to worry about them.

So what’s right for you?

Both options are valid – it just depends on your needs.

If you’ve got a small internal team, low stakes, and clear direction, a videographer might be enough.

But if your video is going to live on your website, represent your brand, support your sales team, or drive results… it’s worth doing properly.

That’s where we come in.

At Boxset Media, we specialise in end-to-end video production – from the first idea to the final edit. If you’re not sure what you need, we’re happy to chat it through and help you make the right call.
