NASP (National Academy for Social Prescribing) is a national charity that champions social prescribing – a healthcare approach where doctors and healthcare professionals refer patients to community activities to improve their health and well-being.
They got in touch with us because they wanted to highlight a brilliant (and famous) social prescribing initiative just up the road from us in the East Midlands – Our Dementia Choir.
The choir is a UK charity that supports people living with dementia, using music to bring happiness, connection, and comfort. This is exactly what NASP is all about, so given Boxset Media’s local presence and long history of creating compelling and powerful case study videos, NASP chose us to work on this emotional project.
NASP wanted the video to showcase the power of music in improving the well-being of people with dementia.
So, we went along to an Our Dementia Choir rehearsal in Nottingham and filmed them in action – getting a premiere performance of a brand new song at the same time! Check out the BBC programme ‘Our Dementia Choir’ documentary with Vicky McClure to hear it!
Our pre-production process was thorough as always, even more so as we were filming with dementia patients. But, having filmed several times before for clients like Age UK and in various care homes across the UK, we ensured that this project went smoothly and was conducted with sensitivity and respect.
Filming logistics were carefully managed to ensure minimal disruption to the choir members and in the edit, we had a wealth of powerful interview comments. We spoke to choir members, family members, and link workers, all talking emotionally about the power of the choir and the impact it’s had on people’s lives. Collaborating with Dr. Radha Modgil, a medical doctor and media personality (from, amongst other places, BBC Radio 1), added a credible and engaging element to the video, enhancing its impact.
The video successfully raised significant awareness about the benefits of social prescribing and the power of music for those living with dementia. NASP were over the moon with the final product, praising its ability to capture the choir’s spirit and the positive effects of their work. The video’s success opened doors for further work with NASP, and we look forward to even more in the future!
