Loughborough University’s Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport had a brilliant research project on wheelchair tennis and needed a way to show the world just how powerful and game-changing it really was.
Their work with the All England Lawn Tennis Club and RGK Wheelchairs had proved that wheelchair tennis CAN be played safely on grass – without trashing the courts!
But explaining all that research in a clear and engaging way? Not as easy. That’s where we came in. Boxset Media’s got a solid track record when it comes to telling complex stories in a simple, visual, and exciting way – and this project was right up our street.
We filmed a mini-series of three videos that captured the full picture – from elite athletes to the science boffins behind the scenes.
We split the shoot across three locations: Wimbledon (of course), NTC Roehampton, and Loughborough Uni. At Wimbledon, we filmed tennis legend Alfie Hewett smashing it on court, backed up by slick drone shots that showed off the speed and skill of the game.
We also chatted with Prof. Vicky Tolfrey, Dr Thomas Rietveld and Prof. Nick Webborn and captured some of the cutting-edge kit they’re using. Spreading the filming out meant we got loads of variety and didn’t have to cram everything into one manic day – especially as we were filming in the peak of summer just as the tournament ended!
Editing tied it all together, making the science stuff easy to understand and the sport look awesome.
The final videos went down a storm. They highlighted how the research is changing the game for wheelchair tennis – literally. The All England Club has already added the findings to the Grand Slam Rule Book, and top players like Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid have credited the new chair setup with helping them win big.
The videos helped push the message far and wide, from elite sportspeople to grassroots players and court staff. The Loughborough team loved working with us (we’re pretty easy to get on with!) and we’re already chatting about more content to keep the momentum going.
