This project was a little different from our usual corporate work! Film director Andrew David Barker approached us to act as the production partner on a short documentary about The Unknown Refugee, a sculpture created by Leamington-based artist John Bridgeman. The piece was originally commissioned in the 1980s following the Vietnam War but was never cast, leaving the plaster version sitting in storage for nearly 40 years. With the sculpture finally being cast in bronze and set to be given a permanent home in Leamington Spa, the goal of the documentary film production was to capture the story behind the artwork and the legacy of the artist.
We worked closely with the director to lead the filming and editing side of the project. Over two filming days we captured interviews with people connected to the artist and the artwork, including members of John Bridgeman’s family and contributors from Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum. We also filmed around the gallery to help bring the wider story of Bridgeman’s work to life. The second filming day focused on the installation of the sculpture itself, as it arrived on a flatbed truck and was carefully placed in Jephson Gardens in front of an audience. It was a powerful moment, and capturing that installation became an important part of the final documentary film production.
The finished documentary tells the story of the sculpture and the artist behind it, documenting how a piece of work that sat unseen for decades finally found its place in the town where Bridgeman lived and worked. The film was later nominated for Best Documentary at the Birmingham Film Festival, which was a proud moment for everyone involved. Projects like this don’t come along every day in the world of corporate video, so it was a real privilege to play a part in bringing this story to the screen.
